Most barbershops cut the outline and let the top fall where it falls. A Japanese men's cut works the other way round: the cut is built for your head shape and growth pattern so it styles itself. Weight is removed inside the hair, not just on the surface, so it lies down in humidity, the crown does not stand up, and it still looks intentional in week five when the fade has grown.

• Consultation first — clipper grade, two-block height, fringe direction, how much you want to style in the morning.
• Wet cut for the outline, dry cut for the top — the top is finished on dry hair, the way you will actually wear it.
