Asian hair carries a lot of red-orange pigment. Put an ash tone straight on top and it either does not show or turns orange, so most salons bleach first — the most damaging step in hairdressing. Japanese double colour takes another route: step one uses a "lightener colour" (a dye with its own lifting power, not bleach powder) to lift the base 2–3 levels while neutralising orange; step two lays the real tone over it.
